MORE ABOUT THIS BOOK

Main description:

This is the third edition of a well-received book that reflects the state of the art in the diagnosis and treatment of acute abdominal disorders in the pregnant patient. It addresses a wide range of conditions, whether associated with or incidental to pregnancy, ranging from very rare to more common ones, such as acute appendicitis and acute cholecystitis.
It updates recommendations, guidelines, and scenarios (seen from the increased number of book pages approximately 20 %, figures of 30 %, and tables of 14 %) to provide fundamental support for all clinicians who might encounter such cases. The book highlights the importance of a rapid diagnosis to avoid serious consequences for both the mother and the fetus. Furthermore, it sheds light on the different imaging modalities of rare pathologies that can occur during pregnancy, helping clinicians and radiologists to define underlying cases better.

This new edition has been almost completely rewritten. The chapter Urologic Emergencies from the previous edition was divided into three chapters which are expanded and updated: 1) Complicated Urinary Tract Infections, 2) Urinary Tract Obstruction, and 3) Urinary Tract Bleeding. The book will have additional 4 chapters, three of them never published in any book as chapters (Bariatric surgery emergencies, Vernix caseosa peritonitis, and Fetal trauma). The total number of chapters increased from 23 (2nd edition) to 29 in this new edition.

All chapters will be significantly updated, and parts of the book reorganized. The most common disease, acute appendicitis in pregnancy, is increasingly and successfully treated by nonoperative management. This is an extremely important topic that no available book has implemented. This is a significant milestone and should be included in every textbook.

The number of coloured, black & white, as well as the number of tables, has been increased significantly.

The book will be equally valuable for general and abdominal surgeons, gynecologists and obstetricians, as well as emergency physicians, who may be the first specialists to have clinical contact with this group of patients.
