MORE ABOUT THIS BOOK

Main description:

During the past century, Halogenated Organic Compounds have been used widely in industrial, agricultural, and consumer products as well as other applications. This extensive use and persistence of these compounds in the environment resulted in global contamination that affects g human health by causing low birthweights, learning and memory deficits, psychomotor changes, and neuroendocrine effects. This volume highlights the Neurotoxicity of Halogenated Organic Compounds, a topic of current interest to several scientists throughout the global community. Three groups of Halogenated Organic Compounds (Chlorinated, Brominated, and Fluorinated Compounds) that are legacy and emerging contaminants are the focus of this volume. Initially, critical information about these three groups of chemicals were discussed by providing background information, characteristics, physicochemical properties, environmental contamination, and human exposure. Next, for each group of chemicals, the following was addressed: Neurotoxic effects (including epidemiological and animal studies); Neuroendocrine effects (significant effects such as drop in thyroid hormones etc); Neurochemical effects discussing mode of action; were included as separate chapters. Finally, future directions and regulatory aspects related to these compounds were discussed.
