Description
This fifth edition book presents the current status of the treatment of children and adolescents with orthopedic disorders and injuries. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons with support from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America is responsible for this publication.

Purpose
The purpose is to present important changes in pediatric orthopedics occurring since the previous edition of five years ago, while retaining core knowledge.

Audience
The main audience is general orthopedic surgeons and, to a lesser extent, trainees. The editor, Jeffrey E. Martus, MD, MS, an assistant professor of orthopedics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and on staff at Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital, is most qualified to supervise this work. He is supported by section editors and scores of contributors, mainly from American institutions.

Features
The eight sections cover general issues, basic science, neuromuscular, metabolic and inflammatory disorders, upper and lower extremities, spine, trauma and sports-related topics. The 48 chapters are updated with new information on quality, safety, and value; evidence-based quality and outcome assessment; growth of the musculoskeletal system; orthopedic-related syndromes; medical therapy; arthritis; and child abuse. Each chapter is supported adequately with illustrations, tables, radiographs, and photographs. The annotated references are most relevant to the subject matter.

Assessment
Since its first edition in 1996, this book has doubled in size as new topics related to the treatment of children emerge, such as genetics and sports medicine. I very highly recommend this work to all orthopedists and orthopedic trainees preparing for national examinations.
