Description
The Orthopaedic Knowledge Update series from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has become the go-to review and reference to maintain currency in the field of orthopedics or to prepare for in-training, boards, and recertification examinations. This subspecialty edition is dedicated to issues of the foot and ankle and is coproduced by the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. Timely updates such as this are invaluable.

Purpose
According to the editor, the purpose is to provide a comprehensive evaluation and summary that orthopedic surgeons should find helpful in keeping current with the literature and providing care for their patients.

Audience
The intended audience is obviously residents in training, fellows, and established orthopedic surgeons. It will have a particular appeal for those preparing for an exam. The editor has brought together a talented group of well-known foot and ankle experts as well as younger, up-and-coming superstars. This author mix helps to provide a nice blend of foundational standards and the most current thoughts in the literature.

Features
The broad review is broken down sequentially, as expected, with subsections of anatomy and general foot and ankle issues, neuromuscular issues related to foot and ankle problems, degenerative causes, problems of the forefoot, trauma, sports-related issues, and an eclectic mix of special issues including tumors, amputations, and nail and skin issues peculiar to the foot and ankle.

Assessment
Overall, this is a wonderful review that is a helpful addition to the orthopedic library. I recommend it strongly as an extension of the OKU series. This book and the entire OKU series provide a great foundation for review and preparation for all exams as well as a great way to keep current.
