The International Society on Minimally Invasive NeuroSurgery (ISMIN) has chosen the beautiful city of Florence as the venue for its 1st International Congress. This new initiative will be the perfect setting for presenting the up-to-date treatments, operative procedures, clinical and technological advances in minimally invasive neurosurgery. This burgeoning philosophy is a methodology requiring a smaller opening and less brain retraction (when compared with the conventional surgery) with the intent of reaching different pathologies through natural openings, like a nostril or a small incision. The purpose is to get to target the pathology while minimizing the trauma to the surrounding healthy nervous system and other tissues. The program, with invited outstanding speakers from all around the world and oral presentations, will cover all the fields of neurosurgery and degenerative neurological diseases, and will be the forum for open and enthralling discussion.

HIV infection remains a global threat with major scientific, societal and human challenges ahead; as a global economic crisis threatens to undermine public investments and access to HIV prevention, HIV treatment and care are in real jeopardy. The International Symposium HIV & Emerging Infectious Diseases (ISHEID) seeks to promote scientific excellence and to strengthen the global commitment against HIV/AIDS as it presents new scientific knowledge and a platform for structured dialogue on the major issues facing the global response against HIV/AIDS. The 2012 programme will focus on current "hot topics" in HIV research such as understanding the mechanisms of HIV persistence and maintenance in reservoirs, trying to find a cure/vaccine and also the socioeconomic and policy aspects. Although ISHEID still focuses essentially on HIV infection, it now encompasses the sphere of emerging infectious diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jacob's disease, avian influenza and viral hepatitis; the symposium currently welcomes the world's foremost experts on these topics. Additionally, ISHEID offers clinicians and biologists highly technical, state-of-the-art presentations by the leading authorities in their fields.

26th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologists

Cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care have come a long way since the last European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologists (EACTA) scientific meeting was held in the Netherlands, some 20 years ago. Cardiac patients as well as cardiac interventions are now more complicated than ever before; the spectrum of cardiac anaesthesiology has broadened and echocardiography, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), blood management and more have become mainstays of this very exciting sub-speciality of anaesthesiology. In all these domains, cardiac anaesthesiologists find themselves collaborating more and more with cardiac surgeons, perfusionists, nurse anaesthetists, interventional cardiologists and intensive care physicians. Traditionally most medical congresses are oriented towards one medical discipline where most delegates are belonging to the same speciality however, this congress aims to address all aspects relevant to optimal teamwork - across disciplinary boundaries. The programme includes key note lectures, refresher courses, interactive discussions, breakfast sessions, workshops and oral and poster scientific presentations. Internationally renowned clinical and scientific experts and outstanding lecturers from within and outside the fields of cardiac anaesthesiology and surgery as well as interventional cardiology and intensive care, coming from around the world have been invited to speak at EACTA 2012.

SpineWeek 2012

The purpose of SpineWeek 2012 is to synchronize the annual meetings of leading scientific societies concerned with disorders of the spine on one location. SpineWeek will be a collaboration between 8 national spinal associations (in a bid to be all encompassing from the very outset) which effectively makes this the last and most significant spinal meeting in the European calendar. The idea of SpineWeek is to synchronize the annual meeting of leading scientific spine societies in one location, thus standardizing meeting logistics both for delegates and participating industry. SpineWeek is set up in such a way that each participating society keeps its own scientific and social identity. Each society selects its own papers, has its own business meeting, presidential address, guest lectures and award sessions as during its normal annual meeting. However participants are encouraged to attend sessions of all societies and the programme is structured in such a way that papers of similar interests accepted by different societies appear in the same section. SpineWeek expects to welcome some 2,500 to 3,000 spine specialists to Amsterdam in 2012 as this quadrennial event collates the diversified expertise of Europe's spinal community into a weeklong forum of learning.

Euroanaesthesia: The European Anaesthesiology Congress 2012

Anaesthesiology is a well-recognised medical specialty whose interest is a continuum of patient care involving pre-operative evaluation, intra-operative and postoperative care as well as the management of the systems and personnel that support these activities. In fact, anaesthesiology includes different areas of expertise, like anaesthesia, emergency, critical care and pain medicine. All these components make anaesthesiology one of the most fascinating, continually developing and innovative areas in medicine. Euroanaesthesia is the bench mark European annual congress and exhibition in anaesthesiology and the European Society of Anaesthesiology's (ESA) primary congress. The ESA scientific committee has planned a comprehensive programme including refresher courses, interactive discussions, workshops, abstract presentations and keynote lectures by internationally renowned experts to attract top leaders in the field of anaesthesiology to the congress. Recent educational, training, and research projects as well as new opportunities for European anaesthesiologists to join in collaborative research projects will be presented together with new grants and awards for young researchers. Euroanaesthesia is also characterised by its high standard of technology: the industry committed to supporting our meeting will take part in the adjacent trade exhibition where there will be ample time for delegates to discover industry's latest products and cutting edge technology. With over 5,000 delegates expected to be in attendance for this year, Euroanaesthesia 2012 looks set to be the most successful congress so far.

23rd Annual Meeting of the European Society of Gastrointestinal & Abdominal Radiology

The scientific committee has assembled a very attractive educational and scientific programme for this year's meeting of the European Society of Gastrointestinal & Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR). The multi-disciplinary flavour that was so successful in Venice 2011 has been continued and expanded for 2012. Abdominal radiology is at the very centre of medical imaging and there will be something in the programme to enhance any attendee's day-to-day clinical practice. The Postgraduate Course, which always kicks-off the annual meeting, will focus on luminal gastrointestinal imaging, reflecting the UK's long and illustrious heritage in the field. There will also be sessions on luminal radiology particularly relevant to our present health climate, notably bariatric imaging, luminal stenting and the ever-changing interface with endoscopic services. The main body of the meeting will provide very comprehensive coverage of the subspecialty: there will be multiple, simultaneous lecture sessions on every aspect of abdominal imaging, small-group workshops, clinical-files, research corners, symposia, and the EPOS electronic poster system. Scientific investigation forms the bedrock of the Society and there will be several scientific sessions each day where a selection of the 1,500 trainees and established radiologists (and related imaging disciplines) will have the opportunity to orally present novel and important research findings.

Live Interventional Neuroradiology & Neurosurgery Course 2012

The Live Interventional Neuroradiology & Neurosurgery Course (LINNC) is once again being held at the suitably modern Carrousel du Louvre in Paris. Interventional neuroradiology and neurosurgery are evolving every year and this meeting is a celebration of these two burgeoning sciences' commonality. It is exciting to see how far these two complementary disciplines have progressed in parallel over the years and whilst the technology has changed, the ethos behind these disciplines remains the same. Neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists demand to be at the very front line of emerging technologies, new therapeutic indications and ethical debates and these live courses are a chance for this highly dispersed community to come together and learn from one another. As usual, a programme of the highest quality has been prepared with HD live transmission from Paris, Helsinki and other live centres in collaboration with the best teams in the world. Lectures, cases discussions or recorded cases will also feature and, as of 2011, live percutaneous spine treatments will be added to the vascular field. Fast growing spinal interventional treatments are now very much part of the LINNC teaching strategy and this, along with the rest of the programme, is expected to attract 750 of the world's leading experts to Paris once more.

23rd Congress of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine

It has become increasingly apparent in recent decades that the period covering conception, pregnancy and early infancy is unique in that a multitude of stimuli, not only disease or trauma, can have a long and lasting effects later on in life. The 23rd Congress of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine is an attempt to demystify these externalities that affect us during the early moments of life and share ideas and research as to how the medical profession can help. The focus is on perhaps the less explored issues, such as behaviour or senescence, which are thought to be involved in developmental 'programming'. Early exposure to irratic nutrition and lifestyle, stress, or toxic chemicals, starting as soon as in the pre- periconceptional periods, can have repercussions that manifest only in (late) adulthood and in this framework, epigenetic transgenerational mechanisms that are perhaps little understood today can have even global implications in the future - such as obesity pandemics and type 2 diabetes. A truly modern and reflexive congress, ECPM 2012 hopes for progress in the scientific understanding of developmental programming, in sharing expertise and opinions of some of Europe's leading professionals, and overall, for a global understanding of challenges ahead.

Cardiostim 2012 will be the 18th world congress of this unique society and is the beginning of a new phase for cardiac electrophysiology in Europe. Though not officially coming into effect till 2014, Europace and Cardiostim will be homogenizing their annual meetings and this year will see the introduction of many of the techniques that will be needed for a full and worthy integration. Initially devised to share developments and expertise between France and the USA, Cardiostim has grown to include a multitude of electrophysiology specialists from 95 countries around the world. In 2012, there will be more debates, more lectures and more case presentations as the organising committee aims to deliver the biggest and best congress so far. As always, the latest technological advances will be presented in tandem with the latest techniques and this is perhaps no more apparent than with the presentation of recent clinical cases with an emphasis on emerging techniques.

14th Milan Breast Cancer Conference

The Milan Breast Cancer Conference mission has been from its first edition to provide state-of-the-art information on breast cancer research. The conference aims to achieve a balance of clinical, translational, and basic research, providing a forum for interaction, communication, and education for a broad spectrum of researchers, health professionals, and those with special interest in breast cancer.

The Milan Breast 2012 program has been developed around a fundamental concept: Breast cancer is not a single disease. Specific biological processes and distinct gene pathways are associated with prognosis and sensitivity to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and targeted agents in different sub-types of breast cancers. A primary challenge for future treatment of patients with breast cancer will be to distinguish genes and pathways that drive cancer proliferation (drivers) from genes and pathways that have no primary role in the development of cancer (passengers). The identification of functional pathways that are enriched for mutated genes will select sub-population of patients that will most likely be sensitive to chemotherapy or to biology driven targeted agents.

Keeping this in mind, also locoregional treatment might become personalized according to specific subtypes of breast cancer, in order to maximize efficacy while minimising the extent of treatment.

The program will address a clear perspective: The need for clinicians to keep pace with the rapidly growing body of knowledge on new molecular pathways, targets, biomarkers, drugs, genomic technologies at the same time, and update skills of care givers to integrate and use such new technologies in daily clinical practice.

18th French National Palliative Care Society Meeting

The organisers of this meeting have particularly asked us to attend after seeing our stand at the European Palliative Care Congress in Lisbon last year. They say that there are not many palliative care books available in the French language and that their delegates would buy and read English titles. With 2500 delegates expected to attend, we thought it was worth testing the waters.

As well as books on palliative care the organisers specifically asked that books on ethics and pain management be included.

The theme of the Congress is Beyond Borders. Alsace, as steeped in history, has repeatedly seen its borders to move. It is a land conducive to reflect technical limitations, human, social or societal, which confront us in palliative care and support.

The IACAPAP organises World Congresses every two to four years. These provide a tremendous opportunity for child and adolescent mental health professionals to not only update their knowledge and skills from the rich scientific content but also to network with child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) professionals from around the world.

The 20th World IACAPA Congress will be hosted in Paris for the third time.

The theme for this year's congress "Brain, Mind and Development" represents a shift in focus from "processes" for child mental health advancement, which formed the basis of the themes for the last three congresses in the previous decade and the first in this one, to scientific advancement and breakthroughs that will lay the foundations for better understanding of and caring for the mental health problems of children in future.

22nd International Congress on Thrombosis

The programme will combine both clinical and biological aspects of thrombosis:

New antithrombotics, antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants are now available. Their mode of action, indications, doses and side-effects need to be clarified, as well as their influence on laboratory tests. In 2012 the place of old antithrombotics such as aspirin, clopidogrel, vitamin K antagonists and heparins will be important to consider.

New approaches based on cellular interactions, proteomics and genomics will be presented and discussed.

Women's health is also a major topic. Pregnancy, hormonal treatments for contraception, menopause or breast cancer are associated with an increased risk thrombosis, and a more recent area concerns all assissted reproductive technologies.
